About Peter Prince

The versatile, intrepid Canadian artist Peter Prince, is based on Salt Spring Island, BC. He has taken his musician’s soul and filmmaker’s eye from the Haida Gwaii to the Himalayas, but his heart is rooted in the natural beauty and culture of the Salish Sea.

Peter Prince’s life and travels inspires a flock of new songs on his latest release, BORN TO FLY.

Peter Prince – Born To Fly

Over the Himalayas here come the birds of heaven,” he sings in Shangri-La as Tara Maclean provides vocal harmonies. The song recalls his adventures in Bhutan shooting a documentary about the Black Necked Cranes and the mountain kingdom’s enchanting beauty and culture.

In The Tongan Way, his fun sense of wonder and openness transport you to the friendly South Pacific isles to find him and his buddy Siopé, “fishing by flashlight” in shark infested waters.

On Curly Blue,”Summer breeze and sun kissed seas” stir up the fires of love as Ian Van Wyck’s double bass grooves with Laurent Boucher’s drums; and Doug Cox’s dobro-guitar dovetails riffs with Bruce Everett’s harmonica.

George Crotty’s cello dances on the waltz-like rhythm of Peter’s acoustic guitar in Beautiful Dancer, a tale of unrequited love. His voice resonates with warm, sinewy strength, Because we didn’t destroy it, our love lives on and on.”

Upbeat gratitude for the bitter and the sweet and vivid imagery inform the title cut, “Born to fly. It’s just another long goodbye.”

The piano-led Sea Wolf is an ode to the aquatic wolf and the legend of a Salt Spring born Cowichan medicine woman who lived in the late 1800s, “And I saw your footprints in the snow. In the dream of a Sea Wolf.”

As Prince mines the depths of the heart for real truth, meaning and story emerge in his intimate, cross-cultural portrayals of love and change, striking emotional chords that resonate deeply with listeners.

The compelling stories behind his songs and passionate performances move both body and soul.

Contemporary global music influences and sonically compelling elements grace his eight albums of original Folk/Roots music. ISLAND WAY and PACIFIC DAY are beloved collections of his songs. CHASING RAINBOWS and LIGHT DANCE are perennial favourites of his relaxing, acoustic guitar-led, all-instrumental music.

Prince’s latest documentary film, BHUTAN – THE KIND KINGDOM, gives voice to the endangered Black Necked Crane and the enlightened conservation initiatives of the tiny kingdom of Bhutan. As Bhutanese farmers strive to save the heavenly bird’s magnificent wetland habitat, his lens captures the Himalayan kingdom’s rugged beauty and vibrant culture. Discover the heart and mind of a land the world has called, “The Last Shangri-La.”
