In an evening of island inspired acoustic roots music destined to move body and soul, Salt Spring singer/songwriter Peter Prince will join forces with master Dobro guitarist, Doug Cox, to celebrate the release of Peter’s sixth album, Island Way.
The show takes place on Sunday, September 28th, 7:30 PM, at All Saints By The Sea, in Ganges, Salt Spring Island.
Island Way’s acoustic guitar-led music captures the spirit of coastal BC in melody and poetic imagery, as Peter’s resonant voice and artfully wrought lyrics explore themes of heartache, hope and humanity. The title cut, featuring Doug Cox on Dobro, pokes fun at BC Ferries and assorted island misadventures as it rides the salty waves of life.
Doug has just returned home from shows and guitar workshops in Alaska, Slovenia, Denver and Nashville. As the Director of the Vancouver Island MusicFest during the past 20 years, he’s been an enthusiastic producer and promoter of traditional and cutting edge artists. Local Folk/Roots fans may recall him playing with Betty Sue the last time they saw him perform here.
Peter and Doug’s first musical collaborations date back to the mid 80’s in Victoria when they co-produced a song titled, It Takes A Long Time to Become Young. The recording featured two highly acclaimed musicians, Mike Marshall on mandolin and Michael Manring on electric fretless bass. The tune was cast in vinyl on Coastal Focus, an album that included songs from Canadian Folk artists such as Valdy, Bob Carpenter, Joe Mock, Jenny Allen, Diamond Joe White, Julio Cabrera and others.
In 2012, Doug invited Peter to perform at the Vancouver Island MusicFest. After many years exploring diverse music and media projects in their respective island communities the two artists hatched a plan to work together again, but this time with a modern hi-tech twist. While Become Young was cut from two inch analog tape circa 1986 in Victoria’s Keye recording studio, the 2014 creative process involved digital audio streamed from island to island. Once Peter recorded vocals and guitar at his Salt Spring farmhouse (Twin Dolphin Studio), he sent the audio file via internet to Doug in Courtenay. When inspiration struck he recorded the Dobro part in his own studio, affectionately named, The Closet. Over the internet he then sent his tracks back to Peter for mixing.
Peter and Doug will combine their artistry live for the first time at the Salt Spring concert. In addition to performing songs from Island Way, Peter is excited to share some newly written tunes on the All Saints grand piano.
“I’m thrilled to have Doug join me,” says Prince. “He’s a top Dobro player and accompanist. From Indian Ragas to Delta Blues, you can throw any style his way and he’ll create something magical. This works well with my brand of Folk, cause I tend to bend genres and blend global influences.”
A portion of the Island Way CD launch concert will also include percussionist Jose Sanchez, and bass man Bob Delion. Sound sculpting will be provided by Donn Tarris. Catering courtesy of Mystic Munchies and the All Saints crew.
All Saints doors open at 7:00 PM. Come early for best seats. Tickets are available at Salt Spring Books, Peter’s booth at the Saturday Market and online at www.peterprince.com.
